International Development Clinic in conjunction with Championships

Posted on | July 19, 2012 | Category: News

At the beginning of the Championships a two-day Development Clinic was held for runners from small orienteering nations led by three members of the IOF Council, Laszlo Zentai, Astrid Waaler Kaas and Brian Porteous.

Twenty runners from 9 nations – Argentina, Brazil, Greece, Kenya, Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldavia and Serbia – enjoyed training sessions in forests close to Lausanne as well as talks and discussion on subjects such as mapping, course planning and club and federation development.

The social side of the Clinic has been just as important, the participants staying together in a youth hotel with many other competitors at the Championships, and sharing their experiences. That they are continuing to do as the Championships progress, with the Austrian runner Karin Leonhardt and Swiss Ursula Häusermann helping them to ‘survive’.

The athletes have been helped with the cost of travel and accommodation partly by the IOF and partly by the Swiss Orienteering Federation and its clubs, the clubs undertaking money-raising ventures to assist.
