Tove Alexandersson made it a hat-trick of victories in Tasmania with an emphatic win in the IOF World Cup orienteering long distance race at St Helens, Tasmania today.

Alexandersson finished the 9.5 km course in 73:03, almost four minutes ahead of sprint runner-up from last Saturday the Swiss Sara Luescher (76:54), with Swedish team-mate Emma Johansson third in 77:27. Former world champion and Tasmanian Hanny Allston was the leading Australian woman, 10th in 83:57, to record her best result in this opening round of the 2015 IOF World Cup.

Multiple world championship silver medallist and world number 1 Alexandersson also took out the sprint and middle distance events earlier in the week to make the best possible start to 2015.

Swiss Matthias Kyburz won the 13.2 km men’s course in 78:29 to go with his win in the sprint distance and third in the middle distance, while team-mate Daniel Hubmann’s second placing (79:46) added to his win in the middle distance and second in the sprint distance.  Swede Gustav Bergmann was third in 80:21 for his second bronze medal of the week.

Tasmania was host of the first of four IOF World Cup rounds for 2015. The biennial Oceania Championships were held in conjunction, drawing almost 1,000 competitors to Tasmania and will conclude tomorrow at St Helens with the Oceania Long Distance Championships for all age classes except the Elite classes who ran today. It will be the final of four events to decide the winner of the Australia/New Zealand Challenge held in conjunction with the Championships
