On the way to the finish Hana Hancikova showed as much happiness as the winners on the long distance. When finishing fourth in the long distance race, the Czech woman was for the first time among the very best in an international championship as a senior.

Before the championships the 23-year-old athlete had the goal to be once or twice among the ten best. On the long distance she finished fourth and close to a medal.

“I want to improve my level and fight for medals. When I have finished my studies in some months I hope to stay in Sweden for a long time and get good trainings.”

She is together with the very good Swedish ski orienteer Erik Rost who also finished fourth on the long distance.

Hard challenge

On the long distance there were some very tough uphills and that suited Hana well, even if she also thought it was really hard. “I didn’t think it could be that much up hill in Sweden. I hadn’t expected that at all”, she says.

Liked the orienteering

Hana thought it was easy to read the map on the long distance and she liked to be high up almost on the level were the trees do not grow. There were also a lot of big marshes. She got the flow in orienteering – which she is well-known of. As a junior she won two gold medals at the Junior World Championships both in mountain bike orienteering and ski orienteering in 2007 and 2008.

“Among the seniors there are many more strong athletes”, Hana, one of the strongest one on long distance, says.
