World Ski Orienteering Championships in Sweden continued with the long distance race on Saturday. Men’s 1 h 40 min long competition was a tough fight to the very last meters, when Andrey Grigoriev beat Staffan Tunis by merely two seconds. Vladimir Barchukov from Russia finished third, before Erik Rost and Peter Arnesson from the organising country, Sweden.

In the start of the last loop the three first men were still together. Staffan Tunis was leading, but Andrey Grigoriev was physically stronger at the end: “On the last control I understood that I had a good gap. Staffan was about ten metres behind me”, Grigoriev tells. This was his second gold at the championships, as he also won the mixed relay with Polina Malchikova.

In the women’s race Helene Söderlund got her first individual gold – and on home ground. She was clearly the strongest in the race, even if she made a mistake on the first loop and was behind Tatyana Kozlova at the first map exchange. Söderlund did not make more mistakes on the last loops and finished as a clear winner 1.35 minutes before Kozlova. Marte Reenaas from Norway got bronze.
