The European Orienteering Championships 2012 continued today with Long distance in Orsa, Sweden. Yesterday’s winner and Long distance World Champion 2010, Olav Lundanes, Norway, again showed excellent performance leading the race throughout. Switzerland’s Matthias Merz grabbed the silver medal 1.05 minutes behind Lundanes. Russia’s Valentin Novikov held second place until the 13,7 km interval but Merz beat him by 25 seconds in the end. Anders Nordberg, Norway, became fourth on the tough 15,4 km course before Switzerland’s Marc Lauernstein and Ukraine’s Oleksandr Kratov. The defending European Champion Daniel Hubmann and the current World Champion Thierry Gueorgiou were unfortunately absent from today’s race because of heel and shin problems.

In the women’s class, Simone Niggli had no real competition: the Swiss took an impressive win beating her closest competitor, Russia’s Tatiana Ryabkina, by 4 minutes. Finland’s Minna Kauppi finished third, 34 seconds after Ryabkina. The fastest Swedes to complete the 9,7 km course were Tove Alexandersson and the current World Champion Annika Billstam taking fourth and fifth places respectively. Norway’s Tone Wigemyr finished sixth.
