Judith Wyder, Switzerland and Jonas Leandersson, Sweden are the two new Sprint champions after closely-fought races in Portugal today. Wyder was fastest by just 2 seconds, whilst Leandersson had a more comfortable victory by 9 seconds in retaining his European Sprint title from 2012.

Second to Judith Wyder in the women’s race was the Ukraine athlete Nadiya Volynska, placed 18th in the IOF World Sprint Rankings before today. Third, a further 15 seconds down, was Switzerland’s Julia Gross. The Swiss women impressed today with 5 in the top 8 to finish – and that without Simone Niggli, of course. Denmark took fourth and sixth positions with Emma Klingenberg and Maja Alm.

It was Sweden first and second in the men’s race, with Jerker Lysell taking the silver medal. Both Swedes are well-known for their Sprint prowess and hold 2nd and 3rd places in the Sprint rankings. The bronze went to Martin Hubmann, Switzerland, who was 2 seconds quicker than his elder brother Daniel on the day. Sprint rankings leader Matthias Kyburz was fifth, and the final podium place went to the up-and-coming British star Kris Jones.

Tomorrow the Middle distance final takes place, with all who ran in the qualifications enabled to take part.
