European Championships Middle distance final: great day for Danes and Swiss

Posted on | April 14, 2014 | Category: News

Gold and silver for Denmark in the women’s race and for Switzerland in the men’s; Signe Søes and Daniel Hubmann both emerged victorious by 16 seconds at the end of two thrilling races.

Signe Søes had a relatively early start and had a very long wait at the finish before she knew she had won. In particular the Swede Tove Alexandersson, who had a late start time, threatened Signe’s time at various points around the course, but a series of small errors near the end put her back in bronze medal position. Silver medallist was Signe’s compatriot Maja Alm who ran a very steady race to get a time 2 seconds faster than Alexandersson. Sweden had three runners on the victory podium.

Fabian Hertner was the closest challenger to the vastly experienced Daniel Hubmann today, with Thierry Gueorgiou, France taking the bronze medal, 40 seconds slower than Hubmann. The other podium placings were taken by Czech Republic, Latvia and Ukraine.

Tomorrow the Long distance final will be held.
