EOC: Swiss success on home ground

The Swiss runners were very successful at the European Orienteering Championships in Ticino, Switzerland. On the final day of the championships, the long distance titles went to Olav Lundanes, Norway and Tove Alexandersson, Sweden. It was the first time during the championships that the the Swiss were left without a title after three golden days.

Tove Alexandersson, Sweden took her first senior sprint gold and Swiss Daniel Hubmann and Matthias Kyburz shared the victory in the first medal race at EOC.

Middle distance:
Finnish Marika Teini won the European Orienteering Championships Middle distance and took her first individual championships gold medal after an exciting competition. In the men’s competition the reigning champion Matthias Kyburz won the fourth EOC gold of his career.

Sprint Relay:
The favourite team Switzerland handled the pressure on home ground and won the first relay of this championships, the Sprint Relay. Judith Wyder ran an excellent first leg and Switzerland was in the lead through the entire relay. Her team mates Florian Howald, Martin Hubmann and Elena Roos also delivered an impressive performance, running solo in front throughout.

Switzerland won the women’s relay and Norway the men’s relay.

Long distance:
Tove Alexandersson, Sweden, and Olav Lundanes, Norway are the new European Champions in long distance. The two Scandinavian athletes managed to overcome the Swiss team in the tough Swiss terrain.
