Deadline for federations’ replies approaching

Posted on | March 8, 2013 | Category: News

Following the 2012 IOF General Assembly’s decision to remove the qualification races for the Middle and Long finals of the World Orienteering Championships (WOC) 2014 and onwards, the IOF Council has presented its proposal for how to handle the question of how many runners a nation can have on the starting line. The proposal was sent to the IOF member federations for hearing. The deadline for the federations’ replies is 15 March 2013, after which the proposal will be finalised and put on the Council’s table in late April.

A central idea in the proposal is the introduction of a division system in three levels, separate for men and women, where the top-8 nations in the world forms the first division and gets three starting places, nations 9-22 form the second division and get two places and nations 23 and upwards form the third and get one starting place. Hence, all nations will be guaranteed at least one starting place. Promotion and relegation between divisions will occur after every WOC and it is a nation’s results in the Long, Middle and Relay competitions in the last two WOC’s that form the basis for calculation.

The matter will be presented and discussed at the Presidents’ Conference during the World Orienteering Championships in July 2013 in Vuokatti, Finland, and the Council will make its final decision after that.
