Blomgren and Kechkina Military World Champions

Posted on | March 25, 2015 | Category: News

The ski orienteering races at the World Military Skiing Championship started off with middle distance. The race was very challenging technically, especially the first half of the course where the track network was very dense. The conditions were quite special with crusted snow and it was possible to ski almost everywhere. This invited to a lot of shortcutting and many skiers made big mistakes.

The men’s class had 26 participators and Erik Blomgren from Sweden finished in first place, 29 seconds ahead of 13-fold World Champion Eduard Khrennikov from Russia and nearly two minutes ahead of the bronze medalist, World Ranking leader Stanimir Belomazhev from Bulgaria.

– It feels really good. I did a solid race with just some small mistakes. I really tried to focus on my orienteering during the first part of the race and save some energy for the second part, which were a bit easier technically but more physically demanding. And it worked out perfectly for me, to win a medal in the World military skiing championship was one of my biggest goals this season, so I´m really happy says gold medallist Erik Blomgren

The women’s class had 14 starters and there was a really close battle for the win. Russian Maria Kechkina took the gold medal only one second ahead of Evelina Wickbom, Sweden. In third place, 1:52 behind, came Natalia Naumova, also from Russia.

– I am satisfied with my race. Of course it would have been nice to win, but I did my best. Now I look forward to the mix relay tomorrow, Evelina says.
