Big growth year for Mountain Bike Orienteering

Posted on | April 12, 2010 | Category: News

Mountain Bike Orienteering (MTBO) takes a big leap forward at international level this year with the introduction of a 4-round World Cup and the first World Masters Championships.

The World Cup competition, the first since 2003 and comprising ten individual events and three relays, will take place in Hungary, Poland, Portugal and Italy. The 8th World MTBO Championships is at Montalegre, Portugal in the period 11-17 July and incorporates the third round of the World Cup. The 3rd Junior World Championships is also part of the programme here.

First-ever World Masters Championships

The inaugural World Masters MTBO Championships will be held alongside the World Cup’s second round in Gdansk, Poland from 3rd to 6th June. It is a 3-day event for classes W/M 40, 50, 60 and 70. The first day is over Ultra-long distance, the second day Long and the third Long with handicap start. There is also an Open Sprint for World Masters classes as a prologue. More information and entry details can be found on

World Cup starts in Hungary

The town of Balatonfüred, on the northern shore of Lake Balaton in Hungary, is the venue for the first round of the World Cup on the weekend of 23-25 April. There will be three individual events in typical karst forest with a multitude of tracks and paths – a Sprint, a Middle distance race and a Long distance race with mass start.

Keen competition

There are now many competitors with good international experience in MTBO, and judging by the close results in last year’s World MTBO Championships in Israel, the competition for World Cup points will be very keen. A rider’s best seven out of the ten individual events will count in the final standings. All the relay races (two mixed, one men’s and one women’s) will count.
