Four Belgian boys are ready to do their very best at the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) in Bulgaria this week. They are running with the inspiration of Yannick Michiels’ results at the World Orienteering Championships (WOC) in Italy.

JWOC starts on Tuesday with the Sprint, and the Belgian team are experienced and know a lot about what they are going for. Tristian Bloemen has in fact been in Bulgaria for a couple of weeks and has really got used to the terrain. He and his team-mates Thokas Gillet and Evert Leeuws were in Borovetz for a five-day training camp with a couple of races in May, and run also Sprint.

Tristian has done very well and is a big hope. “If I am among the ten best it will be good”, he says.

Tristian is looking forward to all the distances, but he and his team-mates are looking forward particularly to the Sprint. Sprints are similar in a lot of places – running in a city environment with streets, parks and a lot of houses. “Sprint can go well, but it is also a kind of poker”, Evert Leeuws smiles. Small mistakes can end with a lot of lost places.

When the four Belgian boys start JWOC they are in mindful that there was a very excellent Belgian running at WOC in Italy at that distance. Yannick Michiels was seventh in Venice. “It’s an inspiration. He shows it’s possible to achieve such a level from Belgium”, Evert Leeuws says.
