Behind the scenes: IOF activities come alive at the SportAccord Convention #SAC2016

Posted on | April 27, 2016 | Category: Newsletter

wod_press_1From April 18th to the 22nd, the IOF participated at the annual SportAccord Convention in Lausanne Switzerland. SportAccord is the union of all international sports federations with 106 member organisations. The Convention is the meeting place for these organisations as well as the IOC, international host cities and events venues, international sports media and a large number of suppliers to sport.

During the convention week Annual General Meetings are held for those organisations that the IOF is involved in, like the International World Games Association (IWGA), the Association of Recognized International Sports Federations (ARISF), the International Masters Games Association (IMGA) and naturally SportAccord. The week also contains a number of seminars about topics which are of interest and important to us as an international sports organisation. The week is all about networking. Important meetings this year were held with the IOC Sports Department, FISU (University Sports) and a number of host cities and venues who are interested in hosting our World Championships and other important events.

The IOF has participated at SAC for many years and has at recent versions participated with an exhibition booth. The goal is to raise the profile of orienteering in the international sports community and to market our events to the various host cities and venues who are present.

1This year we raised the bar even a little bit higher and took a more active role in the week. On Tuesday morning we invited the convention delegates to take part in a morning orienteering activity. Since we were in Lausanne we could use the map from the sprint final at the World Orienteering Championships 2012 to organize a small event prior to the opening of the convention. Thanks go to the local club in Lausanne and also to Matthias Kyburz, winner of the sprint in 2012, who acted as instructor for the activity. The participants were rigged up with SportIdent timing and GPS tracking equipment so that we could demonstrate the use of modern technology in orienteering. And we produced a film from the activity, see it here. The morning activity turned out to be a success and we will certainly try to repeat it next year when the convention is in Aarhus, Denmark.

In addition to the morning activity we also worked hard on getting information to the press. This resulted in some very positive PR for World Orienteering Day.
