Olli-Markus Taivainen has reduced his training hours and become even better, but at the European Championships this year his goal is only to be among the ten best. He is aiming for real success at next year’s World Championships.


15/05/2012 || Johan Runesson – ready for a new Gothenburg ||Arena||

In 2009 Johan Runesson got three gold medals and one silver at the Junior World Orienteering Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden. In the qualifications at the European Orienteering Championships he has shown that he can do well in senior class too.


15/05/2012 || Long Qualification: emphatic victory for Simone Niggli ||News||

Defending European Champion at Long Distance, Simone Niggli, set out her stall in perfect fashion today with a win by as much as 2:42 over one of yesterday’s qualification winners, Minna Kauppi. The male defending champion, Daniel Hubmann, wasn’t on the start list today, but his country Switzerland is the only one to have 12 runners in the finals.

In the women’s class in Sweden, it promises to be a battle between some well-established stars: in the Middle qualification it was those with many years experience who took top placings.

Four years ago Martins Sirmais won a silver medal on the Middle distance in the European Orienteering Championships. This year the Latvian is setting his sights a bit lower.

14/05/2012 || Minna Kauppi – “I have felt restless” ||Arena||

For three months at the end of last year, Minna Kauppi didn’t run at all, and she felt very restless. But in the first qualification race of the European Orienteering Championships (also the first round of the World Cup) she impressed everyone with a fine performance.


14/05/2012 || European Orienteering Championships: 18 nations in Middle Distance final ||News||

Today the first qualification races, over Middle Distance, were held at Falun, wit the results showing that eighteen nations will have runners in the final on Thursday. Defending men’s champion Valentin Novikov RUS made his intentions clear by winning his heat, whilst defending women’s champion Simone Niggli SUI came second behind Anne Margrethe Hausken Nordberg NOR.
