On the way to the second last control a big fense showed up in front of the women fighting shoulder by shoulder for gold. Tatiana Ryabkina (32), Russia, took the best route choice and secured gold for her country.

The Swiss audience was screaming with joy after Switzerland’s second team won the European Championships men’s relay. But it was joy mixed with pain: half an hour earlier Daniel Hubmann, the number one star in Swiss men’s 1st team, had finished with big pain in his foot.

The European Trail Orienteering Championships kicked off today with a 1.3 km long course with 20 controls and 2 timed controls. Before the second and final day, nine competitors in the open class and one in the paralympic class have full points. The second day will be decisive for both classes. Should two or more competitors end up with same points at the end, it will be the time from the timed controls that decides the winner.

Jonas Leandersson is just 22 years old and without any big merits as a senior, but he made the European Championships sprint day terrific for the home crowd and for the whole Sweden by taking a surprise victory.

Simone Niggli, Switzerland, won the third and last individual distance, Sprint, at the European Orienteering Championships 2012 today. A winner of both Middle distance on Thursday and Long distance yesterday, Niggli finished 32 seconds ahead of Sweden’s Lena Eliasson.

Jonas Leandersson was the star of men’s Sprint this afternoon at the European Orienteering Championships in Sweden. The home audience rewarded the Swede with big applause for beating the previous leader, Bulgarian Kirill Nikolov, by 5 seconds.
