Annika Billstam has been working very hard with sprint this year and really wanted to run that at the Championships. The Swede didn’t get selected for the sprint, but the long instead, and won her first Championships gold.


18/08/2011 || An incredible 30 seconds ||Arena||

With a flag in his hand and with big applause from thousands of spectators, Thierry Gueorgiou ran into the arena to take his first gold on the long distance.

“The last 30 seconds of the race I will remember for always”, smiles Thierry.

He was the big favourite on the long distanc,e a distance he had not got a World Championships gold on earlier, and it ended with a very clear victory. The Frenchman was 4.27 minutes faster than second best Pasi Ikonen from Finland.


18/08/2011 || IOF 50th anniversary ceremony at middle distance final ||News||

At 12.30 tomorrow (Friday), immediately before the start of the Middle Distance Final, a special ceremony will be held in the World Championships race arena to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the IOF.


18/08/2011 || IOF Press Conference today at 14:45 ||News||

The organiser of the World Orienteering Championships 2015, either Great Britain or Sweden, will be appointed by the IOF Council today, Thursday 18 August. There will be a press conference at 14:45 at the IOF/VIP Race arena at Le Revard to announce the organiser. At the same time the IOF Council will announce the organiser for the World Masters Orienteering Championships 2014.


17/08/2011 || Men’s long distance final: emphatic victory for Gueorgiou ||News||

The huge army of French supporters had plenty to cheer about in the men’s long distance final: French hero Thierry Gueorgiou won by 4 minutes 27 seconds and the bronze medallist was his compatriot Francois Gogon. The silver medal went to Pasi Ikonen, Finland.


17/08/2011 || Women’s long distance final: again a gold medal for Sweden ||News||

Annika Billstam, Sweden, led throughout the race in today’s final up in Le Grand Revard, a detailed limestone upland with mixed open countryside and forest near Chambery, and won by the big margin of 4 minutes 28 seconds on the 10.3 km course with 450 metres climb over Dana Brozkova, Czech Republic.


17/08/2011 || Gold medals for Finland and Russia in Trail Orienteering Championships ||News||

Dmitry Kucherenko, Russia had a second good day in the Trail Orienteering Championships and came out overall winner today in the Paralympic class. It was by a very fine margin, however; Soren Saxtorph, Denmark, bronze medallist last year, had an even better day and ended with the same points score overall and was just 6 seconds longer at the timed controls.

At its meeting in Chambéry, France, the IOF Council appointed Bulgaria organiser of the Junior World Orienteering Championships 2014.

When Ionut Zinca crossed the finish line he was already showing more joy than anyone else. At the prize-giving it also looked as though he was the winner.
