2006 MTB-WOC: Three medals for the host country on the middle distance

The host country celebrated three medals in the middle distance at the MTB Orienteering World Championships in Joensuu, in the eastern part of Finland.

Tuomo Tompuri secured his first World Championship medal by winning the men’s competition. The silver was taken by another Finn, Mika Tervala, who was just over a minute behind the winner. Ruslan Gritsan from Russia, who dominated the previous World Championships in Slovakia, was third.

Michaela Gigon from Austria managed to succeed in the hunt for gold in the women’s competition. It was her third middle distance World Championship win. She was accompanied on the podium by Hana Bajtosova from Slovakia and Ingrid Stengard from Finland, both first-time-medallists at world championship level.

The biggest surprise was the silver medal of Bajtosova, 22, who has been training for MTB orienteering for only two years. After a promising start in the previous World Championships in her home country, Slovakia, she has begun to concentrate more on MTBO instead of foot orienteering.

– I have no previous experience of Nordic terrain, but I think my foot orienteering background proved to be very useful here, Bajtosova said.
