Yannick Michiels has reached a very high level in orienteering, but he still has a desire to do better.

In the last race of the World Cup in the centre of Liestal, Yannick finished sixth. Earlier this season he was third in the World Cup race in Imatra in Finland. At WOC in Venice he was seventh.

The 23-year-old has high hopes for 2015. “I want to fight for a medal in Scotland,” he says. He lives in the north-east of Belgium in the city Desser. It’s close to the Netherlands. Brussels is about 100 kilometres south-west.

He started orienteering at the age of 14. “It was a part of the athletic training we were doing. I just liked it. Now I have done it for eight years,” he smiles.

At his level he’s a bit alone, but he hopes there soon will be more Belgians getting top international results. At JWOC, Tristan Bloemen did very well and almost got a medal in the Sprint. “It would be good with more to push to the same level and also for travelling together with,” he says.

Over all in the World Cup he finished eighteenth.
