World Trail Orienteering Championships: Gold medals to Sweden and Finland

Posted on | June 9, 2012 | Category: News

Final day of the World Trail Orienteering Championships saw some of the favourites succeed and win the medals while others failed to defend their places. Sweden’s experienced Stig Gerdtman competed calm as usual and secured the victory in the open class before Ukraine’s Vitaliy Kyrychenko and Sergiy Stoian. Christian Gieseler, Germany, finished fourth and Ian Ditchfield, Great Britain, fifth. Kyrychenko, Gieseler and Ditchfield were the only ones to have all controls correct on Day 2. The leader after Day 1, Antti Rusanen, made two mistakes and finished seventh. Last year’s World Champion Lauri Kontkanen did not have the best competitions this year and finished 20th in the results.

Also in the paralympic class it was Sweden that took gold. European Champion 2010 and 2012 and World Champion 2010, Ola Jansson, won the competition before Finland’s Pekka Seppä and last year’s champion Dmitry Kucherenko, Russia.

In the team competition it was last year’s champion Finland that was again strongest – with the same team as last year: Lauri Kontkanen, Antti Rusanen, Pekka Seppä. Only second day’s results were counted in the team competition, and all team competitors had separate timed controls for the team event only, in addition to the individual timed controls. Sweden (Stig Gerdtman, Marit Wiksell, Ola Jansson) was second best and Croatia (Ivo Tisljar, Ivica Bertol, Zdenko Horjan) got bronze.
