World SkiO Championships: Middle Distance domination by Finland

Posted on | February 14, 2015 | Category: News

Domination of the Middle Distance race today by Finland was as emphatic as it was unexpected. Milka Reponen was the fastest of four Finnish women with times within 4 seconds of the winner, whilst Staffan Tunis enjoyed a clear victory in the men’s race over the Bulgarian Stanimir Belomazhev.

Marjut Turunen and Mervi Pesu were the other two women’s medallists, one and two seconds respectively behind the new world champion. Mira Kaskinen will be feeling really disappointed to come only 3 seconds behind the winner and still not get a medal!

Stanimir Belomazhev, taking his second silver medal of the championships, was 13 seconds slower than Staffan Tunis in the men’s race, and the Long Distance champion Lars Hol Moholdt took the bronze today, a further 6 seconds down. Both the veteran Russian Eduard Khrennikov and the Swede Andreas Holmberg achieved a third placing in the top 6 from the three individual races without taking a medal.

In the Junior World Championships Sweden’s Isabel Salen took her second gold medal with a convincing victory by 1.06, and the men’s gold went to the Russian Aleksandr Pavlenko. In the men’s race in the European Youth Championships the winner by 2 seconds was Tommi Härkonen, Finland, who had missed out on the Long distance gold by 1 second.

The final event in the Championships is the Relay, being held tomorrow between 10.00 and 13.30 CET.
