World Rankings: Sweden has most in top 25

Posted on | December 18, 2007 | Category: News

Autumn in Europe is over, and the outcome of the 2007 season in terms of World Rankings is now clear. Sweden has the most representatives in the top 25, with 5 women and 5 men in the lists, followed by Finland (5 women and 3 men) and Switzerland (4 + 4). Fourteen nations have one or more runners in the top 25.

Simone Niggli, Switzerland and Thierry Gueorgiou, France have both enjoyed fantastic seasons and lead the rankings by large margins. Simone Niggli, well used to being at the top of the podium, won two gold medals at the World Championships and won 8 of the 10 World Cup races – apart from her World Championships bronze at long distance, a 5th place in a middle distance race at O-Ringen in Sweden was her only lapse. She leads the women’s rankings by 149 points ahead of the two Finns Minna Kauppi and Heli Jukkola.

Thierry Gueorgiou – well known for his meticulous preparation – has made big strides forward this season, becoming a consistent top performer in all three race formats. He, like Simone, took two World Championship gold medals, and he won all the eight World Cup races he took part in. He was dominant in most of the other races he ran during the year, and heads the men’s rankings by a huge 236 points. Matthias Merz, World Champion at long distance, takes second place, and fellow Swiss runner Daniel Hubmann is third.
