World Orienteering Championships, women’s Long final: new triumph for Niggli

Posted on | July 19, 2012 | Category: News

Home runner Simone Niggli had extra determination to win today, after her mistake in the Middle final. And this time all went according to plan, with a win by 1.31 over Middle distance gold medallist Minna Kauppi, Finland.

This was typical terrain for a Long distance final, with some very long legs across the forest and some short technical legs in between and towards the end. Simone Niggli dominated the race throughout and her win never seemed in doubt.

The bronze medal was taken by last year’s gold medallist, Annika Billstam, Sweden. She was 35 seconds slower than Minna Kauppi today, but well ahead of 4th placed Tatiana Riabkina, Russia. The other podium places went to Anne Margrethe Hausken Nordberg, Norway, fifth, and Eva Jurenikova, Czech Republic, 6th.

The arena on the edge of Lausanne was well filled with spectators who had a long view of runners coming across the field to a spectator control and coaching zone, as well as the long run-in to the finish.  The weather has again stayed kind, with some cloud and significantly lower temperatures than yesterday’s, but dry throughout.
