Norway’s women and Russia’s men came through victorious in the final races of the World Championships, the relays, today in Vuokatti in Finland. Technical terrain made for some dramatic situations as the story of each race unfolded.

For Norway, Heidi Bagstevold ran a sound first leg and then Mari Fasting really took hold of the race, sending Anne Margrethe Hausken Nordberg out on the last leg with a good lead. The very experienced Norwegian made no mistake and ran confidently through the final batch of controls to bring her country home with a margin of 1:14. Finland got the silver medals despite some alarms along the way, and Switzerland the bronze, Simone Niggli finishing 14 seconds in front of Sweden’s Tove Alexandersson. Tove made just too many errors today, and Sweden finished without a World Championships women’s relay medal for the first time in orienteering history.

The Russian team of brothers Leonid and Valentin Novikov and Dmitriy Tsvetkov, buoyed by Leonid Novikov’s gold medal at Middle distance yesterday, ran well throughout and at the end were not seriously challenged. Sweden took the silver medals 50 seconds down and Ukraine an unexpected bronze, Denys Shcherbakov holding off various challenges on the last leg.
