World Orienteering Championships: Middle distance gold to Brozkova and Gueorgiou

Posted on | August 19, 2009 | Category: News

The first World Orienteering Champions of 2009 have been crowned: Dana Brozkova, Czech Republic and Thierry Gueorgiou, France. Brozkova, reigning long distance champion, showed her class with a win by 10 seconds over Marianne Andersen, Norway. Andersen has now got four world championship silver medals and one bronze. Bronze medal today went to Simone Niggli, who is almost back at her best after giving birth last year.

Thierry Gueorgiou stormed round the tricky and tough course to take a convincing victory in the men’s class; he was fastest from the beginning. This was Gueorgious’s sixth middle distance World Championships gold. Daniel Hubmann, Switzerland was 28 seconds slower in silver medal position, and Matthias Merz took the bronze a further 28 seconds behind.

The middle distance was a very tough one, both technically and physically. Many good runners made mistakes and missed their chances for medal. Last year’s world champion Minna Kauppi (FIN) finished fourth after a race with several mistakes.
