World Orienteering Championships, men’s relay: Czech victory in sprint finish

Posted on | July 21, 2012 | Category: News

The Czech Republic won the WOC men’s relay for the first time ever today when Jan Prochazka proved the strongest in a three-man sprint finish. Silver went to Norway and bronze to Sweden, all three teams finishing within 11 seconds.

Switzerland led Bulgaria into the first changeover with Sweden and Czech Republic not far behind. Russia was disqualified because of a mis-punch on the first leg. On the second leg, Sweden (Peter Öberg) quickly caught Switzerland, but Jan Sedivy ran a very strong leg for the Czech Republic and came to the second changeover 11 seconds ahead of Sweden, with Switzerland and Norway still very much in touch.

Anders Holmberg for Sweden caught  Jan Prochazka quite quickly, and Olav Lundanes for Norway joined this pair as the leg progressed. Prochazka came through the spectator passage 6 seconds ahead, but at the TV control on the final loop all three were together.

Switzerland lost touch with the leaders during the third leg but finished a comfortable fourth. A close race for fifth place was won by France, with Denmark getting its second podium placing of the day in sixth.
