World Orienteering Championships, men’s Long final: Lundanes is supreme

Posted on | July 19, 2012 | Category: News

Olav Lundanes, Norway, European Champion in Long distance, had a dominant run again today to beat all the opposition by 2 minutes and 52 seconds. He ran strongly throughout and still had the energy for a sprint finish at the end.

It was a day for favourites after Simone Niggli’s win. Lundanes gradually drew out an unassailable lead, with Matthias Merz, Switzerland ending as his closest challenger to take the silver medal. And there was great acclaim in the arena also for the bronze medallist – Edgars Bertuks, Latvia, who was crowned Middle distance champion two days ago. He was the last starter today and as he came through the spectator control towards the end of the race he knew exactly what he had to do to be ahead of Philippe Adamski, at that point in 3rd place, and he achieved that with ease.

Adamski was 1.06 down on Bertuks and took 4th place. Fifth in the race was Anders Holmberg, Sweden, 1.27 slower than Adamski, and 2 seconds slower again was Bulgaria’s Kiril Nikolov in 6th place.

Full results are on the event website www.woc2012.ch, and more reports and pictures will be posted in the ‘Around the Arena’ section at the bottom of the IOF home page later today.

The runners have a rest day tomorrow, when the IOF General Assembly will be taking place, and the final race, the relay, is on Saturday using the same arena as today’s.
