World Orienteering Championships: 25 nations represented in Sprint Final

Posted on | July 31, 2015 | Category: News

After today’s Sprint Qualification heats, twenty-five nations will be represented in the Finals on Sunday. Five nations had all their starting runners through to the Finals: Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Great Britain and Switzerland.

The races were very fast and close in the outskirts of the north-eastern Scotland town of Forres, with all the 15 qualifying runners within 50 seconds in one of the men’s heats. Heat winners here were Yannich Michiels, Belgium, Kris Jones, Great Britain and a joint first with Jerker Lysell, Sweden and Morten Boström, Finland on the same time. Current Sprint Champion Søren Bobach, Denmark was fourth in his heat. Tiago Romao, Portugal and Sander Vaher, Estonia both missed qualification in their heats by just 1 second.

Twenty-one nations have finalists in the men’s race, eight nations having all their athletes through. In addition to the five nations listed above, these are Latvia, Norway and Sweden.

Winners of the women’s heats were Maja Alm, Denmark, Tove Alexandersson, Sweden and Minna Kauppi, Finland. Tove Alexandersson’s lead was a big one: 23 seconds. One notable name who failed to qualify here was Lena Eliasson, Sweden, and Venla Niemi, Finland missed qualification by 1 second. Twenty-three nations have athletes in the women’s final, eight with all their athletes through – although Denmark had only two entrants because Emma Klingenberg withdrew with an injury. Austria, New Zealand and Russia are the nations to add to the list in the first paragraph.
