World MTBO Championships: Sprint golds for Schaffner and Breitschadel

Posted on | August 21, 2012 | Category: News

Christine Schaffner, Switzerland and Tobias Breitschädel, Austria are the first gold medallists at this year’s championships in Veszprém, Hungary. Schaffner won today’s Sprint by 22 seconds whilst Breitschädel’s victory was by just 2 seconds.

Schaffner, best known for winning 4 Long distance gold medals in world championships (2006 and 2008-10), showed today that she can compete at the top in the Sprint format too. This was by far her best Sprint result. Great Britain’s Emily Benham took a very creditable silver medal after not competing on the international circuit for some time; she is a very experienced MTB orienteer but has not bettered 8th place at a World Championships before. Before today she was world-ranked 87th. The bronze medal went to Anna Kaminska, Poland who was 48 seconds down on the leading time.

Breitschädel won the Sprint in the European MTBO Championships in 2008 in Lithuania. Currently world-ranked 13th, today he was 2 seconds quicker than Marek Pospisek, Czech Republic and 14 seconds quicker thanRuslan Gritsan, Russia – the silver and bronze medallists respectively.

The 12 podium-placers today represent 8 different nations, with 6 different nations on the podium in the women’s race. Russia was the most successful country with 3 podium placings.

Sprint World Champions in the Junior World MTBO Championships are Lou Denaix, France and Grigory Medvedev, Russia.

Tomorrow the Championships continue with Middle distance finals.
