World Masters Ski Orienteering Championships: New gold medal for Korchagin

Posted on | February 7, 2006 | Category: News

Victor Korchagin, world champion in the long distance format in Austria in 1998, skiied his way to the gold medal position in M35 in this year’s World Masters Ski Orienteering Championships, held in conjunction with the second round of the World Cup in Latvia. His victory over the two counting races was by more than 5 minutes, but his compatriot Victoria Fershalova in W40 – also champion in 2005 – had the biggest winning margin outside M80 (see below), an impressive 16 minutes 41 seconds.

One other competitor retained her champion status from last year – Pirkko Tahvanainen, Finland in W65. But some other newly-crowned champions had also been at the top of the medals list in previous years, for example Marje Viirmannn, Estonia (W45) who won W40 in 2003.

Most competitors were from Scandinavia, countries bordering the Baltic Sea or Russia. Sharon Crawford, USA made the long journey to compete but was unable to retain her W60 title from 2005, finishing second.

Finnish competitors won 11 of the 18 gold medals. There was a good entry for this year’s WMOC, with the two oldest participants competing in the M80 class. Here the winner by a huge margin was Arvo Majonen, Finland.
