World Masters Championships a Popular Attraction

Posted on | June 30, 2004 | Category: News

Asiago, on the southern slopes of the Dolomites in northern Italy, is the venue for this year’s World Masters Orienteering Championships to be held early in July. It is proving a popular attraction, with 3,270 competitors now entered for the various age classes, spaced at 5-year intervals for participants aged 35 right up to 90 years old.

The programme for all competitors is two qualification races and a final. Performance in the qualification races decides which of A, B, C etc. classes in the final the runner is eligible to compete in. Only those who qualify for the A final have a chance to be World Champion in their age class.

The programme is:

6th July First qualification race
7th July Second qualification race
9th July Final

Alpine areas with fir tree forest and varied amounts of open ground will be used. Forested steep slopes with stony and rocky areas are promised for day 1, whilst day 2 and the final will be run on flatter terrain with a higher percentage of open ground but also more technical detail, especially on finals day.

Competition will as usual be intense at the top level, but this is an event that anyone can enter and for the club orienteer it is a wonderful experience. There is also a full programme of social events.
