World Cup Middle race: emphatic victory for Helena Jansson

Posted on | June 7, 2015 | Category: News

Two outstanding orienteers with many notable past achievements emerged as winners today: Helena Jansson, Sweden and Thierry Gueorgiou, France. Helena Jansson’s win by 1.40 was particularly impressive.

Nearest challenger to Helena Jansson today was the steadily improving Ukrainian Nadiya Volynska, who recovered from a slow start – 22nd at the first radio – to squeeze into second place just 3 seconds faster than home athlete Emma Johansson. Jansson was fastest throughout, a remarkable performance considering that she had a foot operation only 9 months ago and is still doing running training only every other day. Tove Alexandersson made it three Swedish runners in the top four.

Thierry Gueorgiou lived up to his old “King of Middle” title with victory by 24 seconds ahead of home runner William Lind. Matthias Kyburz, enjoying success in all formats at present, was third, the first of three Swiss athletes in the top six.

Today’s race was run in Munkedal, north of Gothenburg in the western part of Sweden, in a largely unspoilt forest with few tracks or paths, and with some lines of crags and extensive contour detail. Many runners found the going hard. The region will host the World Championships from 20th to 28th August next year with the town Strömstad being the Event Centre.

Today’s was a very strong field with most of the world’s top elite taking part. Many will now be heading for Finland for the Venla and Jukola Relays next weekend.
