World Cup Middle distance: big win for Tove Alexandersson

Posted on | June 7, 2014 | Category: News

Tove Alexandersson, Sweden, enjoyed one of her best ever World Cup victories today in Kongsberg, Norway, winning the first of the two races this weekend by a margin of almost 2 minutes on the 4.58 km course. Olav Lundanes was a popular home winner in the men’s race by just 5 seconds over Finland’s Pasi Ikonen.

Current leader in the women’s World Cup standings, Tove Alexandersson had a clean race and won very comfortably. Second was Helena Jansson making it a Sweden one-two, continuing her welcome return to form, and third was Minna Kauppi in her first World Cup race this year after recovering from some injury and illness. Sweden had three placings in the top six.

The men’s race was very close at the top throughout, and it was only right at the end that Olav Lundanes got a lead over Pasi Ikonen. Carl Godager Kaas, Norway and Matthias Kyburz, Switzerland were also right up with the leading times until shortly before the end when poor route choices cost them vital seconds; they ended in joint third place. Current World Cup leader Daniel Hubmann had an off-day and finished 18th, 2.40 down on the winning time.

The race was physically hard with some quite hilly terrain and a lot of bilberry underfoot – typically Norwegian, it was said. It certainly suited the top Scandinavian athletes, who took all the podium places bar two.
