World Cup Final: Swiss teams dominate Sprint Relay

Posted on | October 14, 2016 | Category: News

Switzerland displayed their current strength in depth today, having three teams finish in the first four. Sweden took second place and the third country to finish was Denmark. The result gives Switzerland the overall title.

The race took place mainly in parkland in the outskirts of Aalau on an afternoon with incessant rain. There was as usual a leading bunch at the end of the first leg with Lina Strand, Sweden 1 first into the finish. At this point the eventual winning team, Switzerland 1, was in eleventh place, 29 seconds down and the other leading contender for the overall title, Denmark was tenth, 27 seconds down.

Sweden 1, with Emil Svensk and Jonas Leandersson, continued with a very narrow lead on legs 2 and 3, and at the end of leg 3 Switzerland 1, through the efforts of Matthias Kyburz and Daniel Hubmann, had moved up into third place, just 8 seconds down. Second place was held by Switzerland 2, and Denmark was still no higher than ninth.

Judith Wyder and Helena Jansson were running the last leg for Switzerland 1 and Sweden 1 respectively, and Wyder proved far the faster, coming into the finish with a lead of 31 seconds. Sabine Hauswith and Julia Gross brought the other two Swiss teams into the next places, and Maja Alm ran strongly as always to bring Denmark up to fifth finishing team.

The result means victory for Switzerland in this year’s Sprint Relay competition, with Denmark in second place and Sweden third. Link to the full overall results at the foot of this article.

Tomorrow the action moves into the forest with the Long Distance race, which has a 3-minute start interval and a paired start with forking (i.e. 2 runners start at the same time). The start order is determined by the order of the World Ranking as of 13th October, with the highest and second-highest competitors starting last. The race takes place between 12.50 and 16.30 local time.
