World Cup final round in Switzerland 4-5 October

The world’s best orienteers will meet in Zurich, Switzerland, on the first weekend of October for the final round of the World Cup. The PostFinance Sprint is known for its fantastic atmosphere.

On Saturday 4th of October, the athletes compete on a middle distance on the map “Wangenerwald” in Volketswil near Zurich. On Sunday 5th of October, the World Cup Final will be held in Irchel Parc of the University of Zurich.

In women’s class, the World Cup is already decided. Anne Margrethe Hausken from Norway is leading with more than 200 points. That means that Minna Kauppi from Finland on the second place cannot catch her anymore, even if she would win both races. Kauppi in her turn has secured a second place before Sofie Johansson (SWE).

In the men’s race, the situation is different: Daniel Hubmann from Switzerland is leading the World Cup with only 87 points. Therefore, Thierry Gueorgiou (FRA) on the second place still has a chance to catch the Swiss, as a victory in one race gives 100 points. The next runners Tero Föhr (FIN), Emil Wingstedt (SWE), Baptiste Rollier (SUI) and Anders Nordberg (NOR) haven’t got a chance to overtake Daniel Hubmann but they can still in theory win Gueorgiou, and they all fight for the third place in the World Cup.

In the morning before the Sprint, there will be a public competition with over 2000 participants. A lot of them will stay and support the athletes from all over the world. The runners like the PostFinance Sprint because of the good atmosphere. Last year Thierry Gueorgiou wrote on his homepage: “I will remember from these competitions the atmosphere around the races. The organizers did a great job and the best moment of the weekend was probably when I was sitting among the crowd watching the women’s sprint race. What a nice atmosphere, orienteering should always been like that!” Fabien Pasquasy wrote: “Last World Cup events were organized in Stein am Rhein (Switzerland) in front of probably the best O-spectators. What an atmosphere in finish areas… Very great for Orienteering… Forgetting tiredness is easy when the public encourage you through entire race (for the sprint).”
