Valentin Novikov – a dream come true

Posted on | July 15, 2013 | Category: Arena

For years, Valentin Novikov has been dreaming about getting a gold in the relay together with his younger brother, but Leonid Novikov hasn’t had such dreams.

Valentin ran the second leg on the relay in the men’s class. Just before him ran Leonid. Both ran well and gave final-leg runner Dmitry Tsvetkov a good position.

At the beginning of the last leg Gustav Bergman from Sweden and Tsvetkov were together. “But at the third control I decided to just run my own race, says Dmitry. The Russian got ahead and so it was gold for Russia again, as on other occasions in recent years.

“I hadn’t been dreaming about being in the same team as Valentin, since I haven’t done so well as him at all”, the younger brother says. But he has had a fantastic end to the Championships, with gold in the Middle distance on Friday and gold in the relay on Saturday. It couldn’t have ended better.

The arena for the relays was the same as for the Middle distance final –Koulurinne, just 10 minutes’ drive east from the Event Centre in Vuokatti. So the terrain was the same as the day before: the top parts of the hills were rocky and detailed with some ground vegetation in mainly old spruce forest. There was also some pine forest, and fallen trees were a hindrance in places, but overall it was good technical terrain for orienteering.
