Trail Orienteering: Marit Wiksell wins European Cup

The final European Cup event of the 2017 TrailO season took place in Slovakia last weekend. In an exciting event, the 26-year-old Swedish athlete Marit Wiksell won the TempO competition and secured the overall crown.

Wiksell, a member of Rehns BK in Sweden, has had a very successful season, winning three of the ten competitions making up the European Cup in TrailO (ECTO). One of the highlights was victory in the FINTrailO event at the end of April, which she won for the fourth year in succession.

This year’s is her first ECTO triumph, her best previous season being back in 2012 when she was just 21. In that year she won both the TempO Trophy at the World TrailO Championships in Scotland and the Open PreO competition at the European Championships in Sweden.

Antti Rusanen, Finland took second place overall in ECTO, scoring 11 points fewer than Wiksell, and third was Geir Myhr Øien, Norway who was a further 32 points down. Rusanen had one victory in the season and Øien had two.

The event in Slovakia was a pre-run for the European Championships next year which has the same organising team. It attracted a very large field from all over Europe, with all the top trail orienteers present. The two main events were PreO on Saturday and TempO on Sunday, and an unofficial Relay was staged on the Saturday afternoon. Marit Wiksell won the TempO competition, getting just 3 wrong answers out of 30 problems on a morning of storm force winds and driving rain – the competition was close to being cancelled. She was 6th equal in the PreO; won by Antti Rusanen, and excelled in the Relay where she contributed to her team’s victory with a flawless performance.

The organisers faced several keen challenges, most notably the storm on Sunday which among other things led to loss of power for a period, but they overcame these with great determination and provided an excellent weekend of Trail Orienteering.
