Tove Alexandersson back on the winning trail

It was again a big technical challenge for the ski orienteers competing in the World Cup in Kazakhstan. A difficult Long distance competition on an area with a multitude of narrow tracks was won by Tove Alexandersson and Staffan Tunis.

On another very cold day, Sweden took 1st and 2nd places in the women’s race, over 15.4 km with three loops. Tove Alexandersson was fastest throughout and beat her compatriot Josefine Engström by 1.16. Third place went to Yulia Tarasenko, Russia, who was 2.08 slower than Engström.

Staffan Tunis continued the fine form he has shown throughout this season with a comprehensive victory on the 23 km men’s course. He also led throughout, and was 2.21 quicker than second-placed Andrey Grigoriev, Russia, who made a significant error on the first loop and then came through the arena in 11th place. The very experienced Erik Rost, Sweden, was third, 28 seconds slower than Grigoriev.

There is now a rest day, and this World Cup round continues on Saturday with a Middle distance race. The races originally programmed for Saturday and Sunday have been swopped as a result of a shortage of snow in one of the competition areas; a reserve area is being used for the Middle distance race, and the Mixed Sprint relay will end the round on Sunday.
