This gold will be remembered

The Finn Topias Tiainen, new Junior World Champion on middle distance, thinks the moment of victory became even bigger when there were three people sharing the gold.

“Now this will be something that will be remembered”, Topias says.

The 20-year-old Finn from Kangasala, just 20 kilometres from Tampere,  is taking part in his first Junior World Orienteering Championships. The middle distance was his second – and second-to-last – chance to win a medal. He did not take part in the sprint race because of achilles problems.

This winter Topias spent skiing, and it was only after the Jukola relay in June that he was able to really train running.

“I went to Jämi, where Jukola was held in 2004, and ran two hours in the mornings and skied in a ski tunnel in the evenings”, he says, and explains that he needs a lot of training to get in good shape.

In the victorious race he started carefully as the course was very difficult, but speeded up towards the end.

“I heard our coach, Jani Lakanen, shout at the last control, and I knew I was fighting for medals”, Topi says.

And his race ended in the best possible way – with shared gold!
