The World Games: Thrilling mixed team relay

Posted on | July 21, 2009 | Category: News

A most exciting mixed team relay was a worthy ending to the orienteering events at The World Games in Kaohsiung.

In the relay, men ran first and third leg, and women second and fourth. The course length was same for all, 5.2 km.

Russia was leading after the first leg, but made the game more interesting on the second by losing 1.5 minutes. On the third leg the sprint winner Andrey Khramov ran the fastest time today and was able to catch leading Sweden. He sent Galina Vinogradova to the last leg in lead, 13 seconds before Sweden and 1.5 minutes before Switzerland. Middle distance bronze medallist Linnea Gustafsson, Sweden, made several mistakes in the beginning of the last leg and lost the fight for gold. Vinogradova in her turn ran a perfect race and brought the victory to Russia before Finland’s Minna Kauppi and Norway’s Elise Egseth. Australia with yesterday’s winner Hanny Allston finished fourth.
