Minna Kauppi did just what was expected and what she wanted to do. Now the incredible Finn has also won gold at The World Games.

– It’s great to win. That’s always good, and especially so here as this was an important race, smiles Minna. The Finn ran her first race ever in Chinese Taipei today, and she said afterwards that it felt very warm. But even though it was warmer than she is used to, she orienteered almost perfectly, as she has been doing all the time in recent weeks.

– There was a section of the race that was difficult, but I avoided big mistakes, says Minna.

– Are you unbeatable now?

– Oh, no. I can make a lot of mistakes. I was beaten by Helena Jansson earlier this year, she says.

She was last beaten some weeks ago now, but just at present it looks like she has found a way of orienteering well in every race. Earlier she was a bit more ‘up and down’.

Hanny back on top

Minna won comfortably, with 22.3 seconds down to Hanny Allston in second place. The Australian wouldn’t really say she is ‘back in business’, after a year where college has been her main focus, but the result is very encouraging for her. Three years after she – somewhat unexpectedly – won gold in sprint at the World Championships in Denmark, she again ran a tremendously good race.

After the two best, the Norwegian Elise Egseth won an international medal for the first time.

The winner Kauppi is taking part in her first World Games, the third to include orienteering. A big difference from the previous two is that there are now three races compared with two earlier. Tomorrow it is the middle distance, and Sunday the relay with teams of two men and two women from every national team taking part.
