Simone Niggli didn’t look behind her once today, and now another fantastic year with map and compass is soon over. And it’s been a particularly special year. “It’s my best year in orienteering ever”, smiles Simone.
This incredible orienteer, with 20 gold medals from World Championships and a lot of other titles, is a mother of three and now doing better than ever. Her orienteering has reached new heights. At the European Championships in May she won three golds. The same happened at the World Championships on home ground in July.
In the last race in the World Cup there was no doubt at all. Simone was alone in front of everyone all the way. Totally alone. She didn’t look behind her at any time and she took all the controls in here safe and fast way.
After the race she was again asked about the future. Just close to today’s terrain is the land to be used for the World Championships Middle distance next year. “Even if I have the motivation, the decision isn’t just related to that. My family is also a part of it”, she says.
Just after this year’s World Championships she was at a training camp in Vuokatti, so she knows what to expect.
The Swedish junior Tove Alexandersson was the fastest in the last race of the World Cup today. Simone was only eighth, a couple of minutes slower, but today the most important thing was to finish first after the chasing start.
