The historical and unexpected medal

Posted on | May 19, 2012 | Category: Arena

World Orienteering Championships in Switzerland is the big goal for Kiril Nikolov this season, but the Bulgarian has already medal speed in his legs.

“Incredible”, smiles Kiril, after winning a silver medal in today’s sprint race.

The 29-year-old athlete finished just five seconds after winner Jonas Leandersson, and wrote Bulgarian orienteering history: this was the first medal ever for Bulgaria at World Orienteering Championships or European Orienteering Championships.

Kiril Nikolov is no newcomer in elite orienteering, and two years ago he had plenty of expectations on his shoulders. He did well then too, but didn’t get a medal. It came two years later and very unexpectedly.

“I have been concentrating on the World Championships, and therefore I didn’t expect to do so well”, Kiril says.

The Bulgarian is doing sports full time and the medal gives of course even more energy and motivation to go on.
