The best-ever Great Britain men’s result on the Long

Posted on | July 10, 2015 | Category: Arena

Aidan Smith is not really used to the mountain terrain in Norway, but has experience and speed and made history during the championships.

Smith finished fourth on the Long Distance, just 39 seconds from a medal. “It’s good to do so well”, he says.

The result is the best ever by a runner from Great Britain on the Long Distance at JWOC. He also did well on the other distances: he was seventh in the Sprint and nineteenth at the Middle Distance. “I am taking part in my fourth JWOC. During the winter I have been training a lot of cross-country and have strengthened my level in running. I have also experience from taking part in JWOC three times earlier. This time I knew I could take my time for navigation and not get stressed”, he says.

The last-year junior is from Sheffield in England. He is studying at the University in Oxford. “There is a good training environment there for athletics, but not so good for orienteering”, he says.

– And not so much of the Norwegian mountain terrain with a lot of marshes?

“For sure not, but there is some similar terrain in Scotland”.

The big talent is studying full-time and his subjects are philosophy, politics, and economics.

As a senior he hopes to take part in WOC. “But there’s a strong senior team. I can wait some years. Maybe there can be possibilities in two to three years’ time”.
