WSOC: Sweden claim Sprint Relay gold

Posted on | March 7, 2017 | Category: News

The World Ski Orienteering Championships kicked off in style today, 7 March, in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. Glorious weather set the scene for the Sprint Relay, and the well-prepared tracks awaited the relay teams from 15 countries.

As one of the favourites, Sweden had something to prove as Tove Alexandersson set off on the first leg. Her fast pace and the surprisingly short course meant that her team mate, Erik Rost, was not even ready for her as she skied into the changeover in first position after only five minutes. Despite this hasty changeover, Rost managed to sustain their lead, and together the Swedes went on to secure the gold medal.

For a long time, it looked as though the Russian team of Polina Frolova and Andrey Lamov had the silver in the bag, with Norway, the Czech Republic and Finland in the fight for the bronze, but suddenly Finland’s Ville Petteri Saarela came in to the fourth changeover and sent out Salla Koskela ahead of Russia. However, Russia soon took back the second position, whilst Finland claimed the bronze.

Evine Westli Andersen and Bjornar Kvale of Norway came in fourth position, followed by Antoniya Grigorova and Stanimir Belomazhev of Bulgaria in fifth and Hana Hancikova and Radek Laciga of the Czech Republic in sixth.

The full results are available here.

The championships continue tomorrow, 8 March, with another action packed and fast paced race, namely the individual sprint. Will today’s results set the precedent for the upcoming races? Will the favourites continue to dominate, or could today’s strong races from for example Salla Koskela and Ville Petteri Saarela of Finland and Evine Westli Andersen and Bjornar Kvale of Norway mean they are set to challenge their reign? Make sure you don’t miss out, follow the races on LIVE Orienteering.
