Ski Orienteering World Cup: Victory for Arnesson and Khrennikov

Peter Arnesson, Sweden, won today’s Middle distance race, the beginning of the third World Cup round and also the European Championships in Miercurea Ciuc, Romania together with World Cup leader Eduard Khrennikov, Russia. At first it looked like Arnesson was one second faster than Khrennikov, but at the end it turned out that the men shared the gold. The Russian Tatiana Vlasova came back to form to win the women’s race by 9 seconds.

Arnesson hit his best form of the season today, and his victory brings him up to fourth place in the overall standings. Andrey Grigoriev was third, 14 seconds slower than the winners, and the Finn Teemu Köngäs achieved a very creditable fourth.

The very experienced Finn Liisa Anttila took second place in the women’s race, bringing her up to fourth in the standings. Third was the very consistent Norwegian Marte Reenaas, 26 seconds behind Anttila. Current World Cup leader Natalya Tomilova finished eighth.

Tomorrow’s race is over Long distance with mass start.
