Ski Orienteering World Cup: Russians take Sprint golds

Posted on | February 14, 2010 | Category: News

The two vastly experienced Russians Tatiana Vlasova and Eduard Khrennikov triumphed in the Sprint, Vlasova by five seconds and Khrennikov by three. Both have been crowned European Champions on several occasions before, most recently on Wednesday when both were gold medallists in the Middle distance race.

Sweden’s Josefine Engström was Vlasova’s closest challenger today, and Sweden took both silver and bronze medals when Helene Söderlund, getting back towards her best form after injury, finished 11 seconds down on the winner. The fastest at the finish was in fact Marte Reenaas, Norway, but she was disqualified for mis-punching. Olga Novikova, Kazakhstan was third in the race but doesn’t qualify for the European Championships.

It was a Russian one and two in the men’s race, with Andrei Lamov taking the silver medal. This race was very tight with the first six finishing within 22 seconds of each other. The bronze medal went to Erik Rost, Sweden, six seconds down on Khrennikov’s time.

The Junior World Champions at Sprint are Maria Nordström, Sweden and Stepan Malinovsky, Russia, the latter pushing double gold medallist Mikhail Utkin into silver medal position by 19 seconds.
