Ski Orienteering World Cup: Norway’s big relay win: Victory means a lot for the sport

Posted on | March 18, 2010 | Category: Arena

In winning the final race and the World Cup for teams overall, Norway achieved its first big international triumph in a men’s relay since 2003.
–The victory means a lot for us and ski orienteering in Norway. We achieve good results and other athletes in Norway see that they are alongside athletes that are doing well, says Eivind Tonna, the 35-year-old veteran who skied the first leg in the winning team.

On the last leg Moholdt was together with the Russian Kiril Veselov for the first half of the course, but after that he was on his own. On the way to the finish line he was followed by his team-mates Kvåle and Tonna. All of them had good races and they said the courses were a bit similar to foot orienteering with a lot of small tracks and quite tricky orienteering.

For Eivind Tonna (in the middle in the picture), ski orienteering has defined his route choices for many years until a year ago. Now he works full-time as a trainer and in development of the training environment in the Norwegian Orienteering Federation. –I am still able to compete at top level, but I am not sure I will go on for another year, he says.

–Not one more year, after the relay success?

–After such a happening it is easy to say that you will continue, but I have to find out if I have enough motivation to do what is necessary. In May I will decide, he says.
