Ski Orienteering World Cup: Khrennikov and Tomilova take individual titles; relay competitions wide open

Posted on | March 15, 2010 | Category: News

Eduard Khrennikov and Natalya Tomilova, top performers in a very strong Russian team this season, secured the individual titles for 2010 in winning the Middle distance races in the final round in Ånn, Sweden yesterday.

Khrennikov, 37 years old with three previous overall World Cup titles behind him – not to mention 15 World Championship gold medals – has again dominated the field throughout the season and has won 4 of the 11 individual events so far. No signs of any drop in motivation here! In terms of victories, Tomilova has gone one better with five wins in the season so far. This is her first overall World Cup victory in a long and successful ski orienteering career.

Six different athletes so far have taken top place on the podium in the men’s World Cup this season, with just the final Ultra-long race left on Wednesday. Staffan Tunis, Finland, with two victories to his credit and currently third in the standings, can still achieve second place overall if he wins on Wednesday. The Russian Andrei Lamov, also with two victories this year and currently fourth, can get up to third with another win.

The names of the first three in the women’s overall standings – Natalya Tomilova, Marte Reenaas and Olga Novikova – are now settled, but a top placing from Novikova on Wednesday can bring her up into second place. Reenaas has so far won two of this year’s competitions and Novikova one. Tatiana Vlasova, previous World Cup winner and current World Champion at Middle distance, has competed in only three races this season but was victorious in two of them.

In contrast, the relay competitions are still wide open, with Russia and Sweden equal on points at the top of the women’s standings and Norway, Russia and Sweden with 105, 103 and 100 points respectively at the top of the men’s. The winning team in a relay race gets 20 points, second place 17 and third place 15. So a very exciting day of competition is in prospect tomorrow when the final relay races are held.
