Ski Orienteering World Cup Final in Åre, Sweden

The final round of the World Cup in ski orienteering begins this weekend in the Swedish Åre, which is most known for its big alpine competitions. As next year’s World Ski Orienteering Championships are held in Sweden, this final World Cup round also serves as Pre-World Championships event.
The last four races in the World Cup take place in the terrain north of Ånn inn. The competitions begin with sprint distance on Saturday March 13th, continue with middle distance on Sunday 14th and relay on Tuesday 16th, and end with the new distance “ultralong” with mass-start on Wednesday 17th. The ultralong distance is 35 km for men and 25 km for women.
In men’s class the Russian Eduard Khrennikov has got a big lead before the final round both in the World Cup and in the Sprint World Cup. The women’s World Cup also has a Russian leader, Natalya Tomilova, followed by Olga Novikova from Kazakhstan and Marte Reenaas, Norway, on third position. Josefine Engström from Sweden leads the women’s Sprint World Cup, and might be able to take the overall victory in front of the home audience in the final sprint on Saturday.
