–It’s almost bigger to win a European Championship than a World Championship since the big nations like Russia, Sweden and Finland can have six runners each here compared to four runners at the ski orienteering World Championships, Marte says.

She is 31 years old; Staffan is 27. Both have been in the ski orienteering business for a while. Both are former world champions in relay, but individually have missed gold at both European and World Championships.

Marte has become better and better and has begun to be a regular winner. Some days ago, in Bulgaria, she won her first World Cup race. – In earlier days I didn’t have the calmness I have now, she says. Marte was fighting hard with Liisa Anttila for the victory. The Finn was leading on the way to the last control, but she fell in the snow and Marte took the opportunity and got her first gold.

For Staffan, studies have a bigger priority this winter and he has trained less than earlier. – But I have been training well and maybe I have raised my level a bit, he says. Staffan had a gap of almost two minutes down to Eduard Khrennikov on second place.
